THE GREEN PAGES
Welcome! The Green Committee of the San Francisco Chapter of CSI is going public! We’ve been meeting and exchanging information on sustainable issues since June, 2002 and now we want to share our knowledge via the Chapter website. We hope you find these pages to be useful – please contact us if you have any questions or would like to join us.
MISSION:
To provide CSI/SF members with sustainable education opportunities and to develop resources and tools that facilitate the integration of sustainability into specifications.

RESEARCH LINKS
The following are general sites that provide reliable updated information across a wide spectrum of green building issues:
U.S. Green Building Council [4]: These are the folks who created LEED. Membership is currently comprised of companies and organizations, not individuals. However, anyone may take the courses and exams to become LEED accredited. The website also has a great deal of information available to non-members, including downloadable versions of LEED guidelines and a variety of other useful documents. The USGBC Northern California Chapter [5] does accept individual members and has a number of great educational programs and events.
Pacific Energy Center [6]: The Pacific Energy Center (PEC) offers classes on a wide range of important topics for architects, engineers and designers. All these classes are free, and many of them carry CE Units. Go to PG&E’s website, click the education button to find the PEC and pick the location of a center near you to see the class offerings.
BuildingGreen [7]: To really get the full benefits of this site, one must subscribe, but it worth the cost of admission. A subscription allows access to the Green Building Suite, which consists of three vital components. Environmental Building News has been providing in-depth articles on green building products and topics for 15 years. EBN accepts no advertising. Think of it as Consumer Reports for green building. GreenSpec is their product database. Lastly, they provide case studies, now going back a number of years and covering a range of projects.
Scientific Certification Systems [8]: This Company is an independent third-party certifier of single attribute claims. Each certification must be updated annually in order to remain on the list. Their products list is organized by CSI MasterFormat Divisions and may be accessed free of charge.
Whole Building Design Guide [9]: Whole Building Design Guide (WBDG) in conjunction with Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has drafted over 20 different several green specification sections from general conditions to electrical for you to use on your next project. There are also programming documents for different building and space types, delivery methods, case studies and links to federal regulations.
This list is comprised of more in depth sustainable research resources:
Green Building Studio [10]: This site as an easy-to-install FREE web service that will provide immediate and reliable energy use and cost information for early building design alternatives. Just send them a 3D CAD model or models and basic info and they’ll perform the analysis to help you select an energy efficient design.
Energy Design Resources [11]: Here you will find provides free design tools, in particular software, to assist in the design of energy efficient buildings in California. They have been designed to be quick and easy to use. They have also collected lists of resources for energy efficient design.
CHPS [12]: The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) is a California coalition of agencies focused on creating sustainable school buildings.
American Center for Life Cycle Assessment: [13] This non-profit organization offers a wide range of tools for working with LCA. Perhaps most importantly, they have some very clear basic information on their site that can serve as good starting point for understanding this extremely complex process.
